Topic: Advocacy 101
As a citizen, it is important for you to voice your opinions on issues like substance misuse to policymakers who shape the laws governing your community. Advocating for policies to promote the health and safety of your fellow community members and your family is imperative. If policymakers do not hear your voice, they may not consider the position for which you stand. Advocating to policymakers for the first time may seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. This ACTION Guide provides tips for anyone who would like to address an issue by organizing their community as well as engaging with key decision-makers. It outlines different avenues for advocating, distinguishes between advocacy and lobbying, and provides tips for both the seasoned and new advocate. If that isn’t convincing enough, it also includes a list of the top ten reasons to speak out about your cause.
